Professorship in Entrepreneurship and Migration
The Haniel Foundation is supporting InZentIM – the Interdisciplinary Centre for Integration and Migration Research at the University of Duisburg-Essen – with one of five professorships, co-funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The professorship is intended to investigate, in particular, how and why people who have come to us from other cultures pursue their careers by establishing their own company or start-up business.
Immigration and cultural diversity are the most hotly discussed challenges facing our society at present. The University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) has long been concerned with the conditions, processes and consequences of integration and migration. More than sixty scientists from a range of different disciplines are currently devoting their time and effort to this task. The goal of the new Interdisciplinary Centre for Integration and Migration Research (InZentIM) is to pool, network and expand the scientists’ expertise. The official launch took place on 8 February in the presence of a number of prominent guests.
It has been a major success: thanks to a highly successful joint effort from people involved in politics, economics and science, the UDE can now advertise three endowment professorships together, funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Evonik Foundation and the Haniel Foundation. A further five similar professorships are envisaged, some of which fall under the auspices of the Bund-Länder-Programm zur Förderung des Wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses (Federal/State Programme for the Promotion of Young Scientists). The Centre positions itself both inside and outside Germany as broad-discipline research centre concerned with integration and migration issues.
The endowment professorship in research into “Entrepreneurship and Migration” will be attached to the Mercator School of Management – the Business Administration Faculty of the University of Duisburg-Essen.
The Haniel Foundation sponsors the professorship in Entrepreneurship and Migration at the Mercator School of Management which is concerned with start-up and management activities undertaken by immigrants. It is felt that this phenomenon warrants scientific investigation and can be made beneficial to society, as a study carried out by the Bertelsmann Foundation shows that people with a migration background have a particular affinity for business start-ups.
